Have you recently found out youre going to become a grandparent or do you have reason to believe you may be soon (such as your child just got married)? If so, then you may be ready to learn more about preparing to be a grandparent.

When you are a parent, youre responsible for your child but now that they are an adult and having children of their own, its time for you to relax and reap the rewards of just enjoying the fun stuff. While it may be difficult at times, its important to remember that your child is now in charge of the parenting and you get to just sit back and enjoy time with your grandchildren.

If your child is about to have a child of their own, there are many ways that you can help. You can be supportive of your child and make sure you let them know that you are available if they need anything or have any questions. It can be especially helpful for a mother to be there for her daughter when she gives birth to a child of her own. She will probably have many questions for you.
But theres a lot more that goes into becoming a grandparent and its important that you learn how to prepare so you can be the best grandparent you can be.

Dont Forget Yourself

While you are taking care of your child and your new grandchild, its important to remember to care for yourself. Becoming a grandparent, especially for the first time, is a big life change and will require a transition. Its time to stop thinking like the parent and time to become a grandparent. If you still have non-grown children of your own, it can make this transition even more difficult.
Its important to separate yourself as the parent and yourself as the grandparent when the situations call for it. Its tempting to try to be a parent to your grandchild, especially if you dont agree with how your child is parenting but its important that you avoid this.

Becoming a grandparent doesnt mean losing your identity as a person, a parent or an individual. It can make some people feel uncomfortable, especially if they become a grandparent earlier than they were expecting. This doesnt have to mean youre getting old or that your child doesnt need you anymore now that they have children of their own.

Instead, it means that your role in the family will change but not that you wont be needed anymore. You now have a very important role that you need to learn to fill. Just like you had to adjust when you first became a parent, you will also need to adjust and prepare for becoming a grandparent.

Tips for Becoming a Grandparent

Here are some tips for becoming a grandparent to help you:

Resist the urge to offer advice when it isnt asked for
Dont criticize your childs parenting in front of the grandchild (or in front of other family members)
Remember to share your own parenting experiences with your child
Share fun or comical stories of parenting with your child
Be open and available to talk if your child does have questions
Remember not to try to parent your grandchildren
Dont undermine your childs parenting decisions when you have the grandchildren in your care
Childproof your home- if you havent had little ones in your house in some time, it may be time to re-childproof everything before your grandchildren come over
Remain a positive influence for your child and grandchildren
Spend quality time with your grandchildren
Remain involved in important events

Becoming a grandparent can be one of the happiest, most fulfilling things you will ever do with your life. This is a new stage in life and a new role for you in the family.

Preparing for the Future

Another thing that you may start thinking about at this time is the future. If you havent done it already then by the time you become a grandparent, youre probably going to start thinking about your last will and testament, finances and other affairs.

This is a good time to develop an estate plan if you dont already have one. If you are financially able, you may also want to plan for your grandchildrens college or other expenses. If you plan to help with this, be sure to talk with the parents (your children) about your decision.
